High Speed 2 (HS2) has reached a major milestone as the giant tunneling machines completing the 10-mile Chiltern tunnel reached their final destination, signaling that Phase 1 of the project is now 80% complete.
The completion of the longest tunnel on the route is seen as a turning point for the controversial project, which has faced significant delays and budget overruns. Engineers say the focus will now shift to track laying and the installation of complex signalling systems.
"This is a triumph of British engineering," said the HS2 CEO. "We are building the backbone of our future rail network, and the momentum is now unstoppable."
Despite the progress, debate continues over the decision to truncate the line at Birmingham. Business leaders in Manchester and Leeds have renewed calls for a long-term plan to connect the North, warning that the 'connectivity gap' remains a drag on national productivity.
